Are you looking for a super easy and fast bread recipe to use with your children? This recipe is suitable for toddlers but an older child from 6-8 years may be able to make it by themselves. Yesterday my nine and two year old children made it together.

Easy Turmeric Flat Bread

Ingredients:

1 Cup of Self Raising Flour

1 Cup of Natural or Greek Yoghurt

1 Teaspoon Ground Turmeric

¼ Cup extra Flour for flouring board, rolling pins and hands.

Method:

  1. Put the ingredients into a large bowl.
  2. Mix ingredients together until it forms a dough (a largish ball).
  3. Put some spare flour on a board.
  4. Take dough out of bowl and knead on the floured board.
  5. Divide dough into (approximately six) smaller balls - can make them larger but this size is good for a child/toddler's rolling pin
  6. Roll into Flat Bread approximately 1-1.5 cm thick with with rolling pin.
  7. Cook Flat Bread in pan or grill. We use a fry pan with a little olive oil.
  8. Serve and eat with dips, curries or soups.

Notes:

Makes around six child sized flat bread.

The Turmeric add the yellow/orange colour. You could substitute it with some minced garlic or other herbs and spices.

The Flat Bread dough could be rolled thinner and used for a Flat Bread sandwich.

Flat Bread could be cut into strips for serving with dip or soup.

I pre-measure everything because I am cooking with a toddler (2.5 years) for a slightly older child this would be easy for them to measure, because it's only a few steps it's quick and can hold the child's interest and attention!

Put flour onto the board. My toddler loves this part!!

Put the dough on the floured board and lightly knead. Here we divided the dough into two so each child had some to knead.

Each child kneads their dough but only enough to bring it all together into a nice ball. Then we cut each piece of dough into three. So we have six small pieces.

No matter how many children you are working with you want around six small balls ready to roll into the Flat Bread.

The children roll each of the six pieces into a ball or 'sphere' with their hands. This is a learning point for a toddler and is great for their developing hand strength and coordination. (See very top image).

Then the children roll each of the six pieces into the flat bread at around 1-1.5cm thick. The child may also need flour on their hands and on the rolling pins. If you can it's useful to work along side the toddler or have and older child work alongside the toddler, it's easier for them to see what to do.

Children learn best from each other!

Remember when working with children we need to let go of perfection, the Flat Breads are far from perfect but they are child made!

We fry the Flat Bread in a pan with a little olive oil. An older child could do this step themselves in an electric pan. Once cooked the golden colour is due to the Turmeric. If you wanted it white you could leave out the Turmeric and add other spices for flavour.

Then serve. Perfect for dips, curries and soup. Yum!
