
Bicarbonate of soda is a cleaning superstar, thanks to its gently abrasive nature and the fact that its a great natural deodoriser. Here are five ways you can make use while you are cleaning.

1. Absorb food odours in the fridge
Fill a ramekin with bicarb, pop it on a shelf and leave it to work its magic.
2. Freshen a stale sponge
Mix bicarb with water and leave the sponge to soak in the solution.
3. Cleaning the kitchen
Clean countertops, stainless-steel sinks, utensils and microwaves. Simply mix bicarb into a paste with water and scrub.
4. Remove tarnish from sterling silver
Make up a paste using three parts bicarb and one part water and apply it with a lint-free cloth or paper towel, then rinse.
5. Stop trainers smelling
Sprinkle a little bicarb inside them, then tap it out before your next run
