Chili Fried Fish Tacos Recipe: A Different Take On Singaporean Chili Crab

We know that chili crab has to have crab. It’s literally in the name. But since making our chili crab sauce recipe, we realized something. The rich, gloopy gravy—which is really the star of the Singaporean dish—doesn’t have to be boxed in crustacean territory. You can use it with other things; case in point: these chili fried fish tacos.

This recipe is great to use when you’re planning a party for a group. It’s easy and customizable, and people can add (or not add) whatever toppings they like later on. Different from a regular taco spread, though, it’s pescetarian friendly and leans towards an Asian flavor profile.

How to Make Chili Fried Fish Tacos

This simple recipe only really involves frying the fish and assembling the tacos. That’s because it goes hand-in-hand with our chili crab sauce (which is easy to make too, don’t worry). So before you even start here, head over to our chili crab sauce recipe and make that.

Once you have the chili crab sauce recipe ready, set it aside but keep it warm. Now you can start prepping the fish tacos. Start by preheating your oil to 350F.

Then, make the fish batter by whisking together the soda water, 3/4 cup flour, baking powder, and salt. This is our basic tempura batter recipe.

The elements help ensure that you end up with fish that have a light and crispy exterior. Meanwhile, place the remaining cup of flour in a separate bowl or plate. This might be too much, so you can put just as much as you think is enough to cover your fish.

Dredge the fish in the flour, then slowly dip it into the batter. Carefully lower the fish into the hot oil and fry for about five to eight minutes per piece, flipping if necessary. During this time, the fish should puff and take on a golden brown color.

After frying, remove the fish and transfer them to a plate or tray lined with paper towels.

Serve the fried fish with chili crab sauce, tortillas, shredded cabbage, and other toppings of choice. We recommend adding guacamole, salsa, or pickled veggies to balance out the sauce.

To assemble the chili fried fish tacos, place the fish on the tortillas, add the sauce, then place the toppings last. If you want it a little less messy, you can also dip the tacos into the sauce, instead; kind of like birria tacos.
